The season is upon us with Thanksgiving Day fast approaching. You have become bombarded with all the joyful music and commercials on the TV. Some of those commercials include adorable puppies! Puppies you want to snuggle with and have them give you kisses with that melt your heart puppy breath! You want one, don’t you?! I mean, have you seen the Mercedes-Benz commercial??
I LOVE dogs! I think they are the best gift a human could ever have. They help you feel loved, they lift any bad mood, and they can be the most loyal friend you will ever have. I think EVERYONE should have a dog! EVERYONE!! However…that sweet ball of love may cost more than you planned. So, we have broken it down for you so you can decide if you are ready to take the leap and make a dog purchase for the holidays. WARNING: the below spending amounts should NOT be taken lightly!
This list breaks down what we estimate as the annual cost of having a medium-sized dog. That total number comes to about $1,400! Wow, that added up quick. This is just for regular care of your pet and wouldn’t include any special medical needs or extra boarding or dog walking fees if you need them.
Now, look at the total with the initial costs that exist for purchasing that beautiful furball! Our total with initial costs would be as low as about $2,000 for the first year of pet ownership. If you have a very young puppy you’ll probably need another $200-$300 for vaccines. And, if you must have the “no-shed” poodle doodle versions you are definitely adding another $1,000 or more to the total. EEK!
So think about it and don’t blow the budget just yet if you aren’t ready. Purchasing a dog will impact your budget and it is definitely something you should plan ahead for and not something that you should charge or use money from your emergency fund. If this holiday isn’t the right time that’s ok. Think ahead to Valentine’s day or another special spring event where you can commit to sharing your heart with a dog.
BTW…don’t forget your local animal shelters! They have the best dogs who need your love! My fur baby is a mix breed who has been such a blessing to our family. We can’t imagine life without her.
