I am a forty something-year-old wife, mother, sister, daughter, and a friend to some wonderful people. I am also a people pleaser who truly loves to see people happy and finds motivation when I can contribute to that. So as I sit here in the hair salon, waiting for my highlights to process, I got to thinking…
When I go to the hair salon or get my nails done to make myself look a little better I think I do it more for others that are in my life or people I may meet.
I was several weeks past my time to get my touch up and boy were my gray hairs showing! Thanks to my dad, I will indeed have more silver than I would like ;). My dad looks great with his salt and pepper so I thought hmm, maybe I can pull that off too. After all, I really do NOT like the time or the money it takes to get my hair cut and colored.
I mean really, $250 for this salon visit and they want me to come every 6 to 8 weeks AND I will be here for 3 hours! 3 HOURS! I mean who am I really doing this for????
Well, the truth is, it really isn’t for me. Yes, I feel prettier and a little more confident for a few days but that’s definitely not what makes me come back time and time again. It is the idea that people around me like the way I look or they can be a little more proud of being with me. I know I am a beautiful person on the inside and I know my loved ones think that too. But my people pleaser self likes to make them proud and I want to “represent,” if you will. LOL! After all, I am not looking at myself very often, other people are. Right?
So what do I do that is just for me?
My finances are just for me! I definitely am a dreamer and I have financial goals that are just my own. I have some that are for my husband and me too. Thankfully, he is usually a willing party to my dreams!
All that other surface stuff, or self-care stuff for the outside appearance, isn’t really for me. My commitment to each baby step I need to take in order to make my dreams a reality IS JUST FOR ME! I have goals like:
- being debt-free
- buying rental properties
- traveling with my family
- having a secure retirement
- leaving a legacy for my children
- taking care of an aging parent
These are the things that make me happy, not the color of my hair or the whiteness of my teeth! When I dig deep I realize I do things related to my appearance really for others but when it comes to money and my future, that is when I really start doing things for ME!
What do you do that is just for you (not for the approval or impression you give others)?
